SEO agency

An SEO company in Quebec that does the work itself

Shopping for an SEO company means reading the same promises twenty times over: first position, guaranteed results, a “tailored” package nobody will put a price on. We do the opposite. This page lays out what an SEO agency actually does, what it genuinely cannot do, what it costs here — $100 an hour, written plainly — and how to tell whether it is worth it for your business at all. We are Actif Marketing, based in Sainte-Julie on Montréal’s South Shore. Nothing is outsourced: the person who answers your call is the one fixing your site and writing your pages.

Technical SEO: making your site readable to Google

Before Google can rank you, it has to be able to read your whole site. It is the least glamorous part of the job and frequently the part that unlocks everything else. We look at what the crawler actually sees: which pages are indexed and which are not, what slows loading down on a phone over cellular data, missing or duplicated titles and tags, broken links, redirects stacked on top of each other, absent structured data, French and English versions declared incorrectly. None of it is visible to the naked eye, and all of it can cap a site for years without anyone noticing.

Part of the technical work is plumbing: open it up, fix it, close it again. The other part is architecture. When three different pages on your own site target exactly the same search, they compete with each other and none of them wins. So we reorganise the structure until one search intent maps to one page, with internal links pointing the right way. That is why a smaller, better-built site regularly beats a bigger and older one.

Content: answering the real questions before your competitors do

Google ranks pages, not companies. If your site has a single services page listing eight specialties in two sentences each, you have no page that truly answers anything. Content work means identifying what your customers actually type before buying — questions about price, timing, comparisons, whether this is even for them — and then writing one serious page for each of the searches that lead to a call or a quote request. Not fifty thin pages: a handful that genuinely deserve to be read.

Writing for search does not mean hammering a keyword until the sentence breaks. It means naming things the way your customers name them, covering a subject properly instead of skimming it, and giving a real answer rather than a call to action dressed up as an article. Useful writing gets read, gets shared and eventually gets cited. Writing produced purely for an algorithm gives itself away within three lines — and for a few years now, Google has been picking up on it too.

Local SEO: existing in your own region

For a business serving a territory, most of the visibility happens in the local pack: the map, the three listings at the top, the stars and the opening hours. Google leans mainly on three things to decide who appears there: how relevant your business is to the search, how close the searcher is to you, and how well known your name is elsewhere online. You cannot relocate on demand, but you can work on the other two — and that is exactly where most businesses leave visibility on the table.

In practice that means a complete, maintained Google Business Profile — right categories, detailed services, real photos, service area, questions answered — contact details that are exactly the same everywhere your business is mentioned, reviews requested systematically rather than by chance, and dedicated pages for the towns you genuinely serve. Not thirty generated pages with the municipality swapped out: pages with content specific to each area, because Google treats the other kind for exactly what it is.

Authority: giving Google reasons to trust you

When two sites have equally good content, trust is the tiebreaker. Google measures it largely through what the rest of the web says about you: who mentions you, who links to you, and in what context. It is the corner of the trade most damaged by bad practice, because buying hundreds of worthless links is easy. It works for a while, then it turns on the site — and the client is the one left cleaning up, not the supplier.

We build authority slowly and cleanly: associations and chambers of commerce you actually belong to, industry directories that mean something, suppliers and partners with a genuine reason to mention you, content useful enough that people link to it unprompted, and a consistent presence under one business name. It looks less impressive on a dashboard than a link graph shooting upward, but it does not fall apart at the next algorithm update.

Measurement: knowing what worked and what produced nothing

Without measurement, SEO becomes a matter of faith, and that is precisely what lets some suppliers bill for months without delivering. So we connect the tools from day one, under your own accounts: Google Search Console to see which searches already show your site and at what position, traffic analytics to see which pages actually bring people in, and tracking of real inquiries — calls, forms, quote requests. The data history belongs to you and stays with you, even if we stop working together.

What we watch first is not the average position on some flattering keyword. It is how many searches your site appears on, how pages stuck just below the first page are moving — the ones where a few hours of work change everything — and above all how many inquiries come in. A page that climbs without ever producing a call is a failure, however green the report looks. We would rather tell you a line of work produced nothing and change approach than repeat the same recipe hoping for a miracle.

How a mandate actually runs with us

01

A call before any quote

About thirty minutes, free, with no sales deck. We want to know what you sell, to whom, in what territory, what pays you best and what you have already tried. Often that call alone shows whether SEO is the right spend for you right now. If the answer is no, we say so during the call.

02

A written assessment, priced in hours

We review your site, your current rankings, your Google listing and whoever ranks ahead of you locally. You get, in writing, what is blocking you, the order we would fix it in, and how many hours each block takes at $100 an hour. You can drop blocks, postpone them, or take the list and have someone else do the work.

03

We clear the technical side first

Indexing, speed, mobile, titles, tags, redirects, structured data, pages cannibalising each other. It rarely impresses anyone in a presentation, but it is what produces the first movement. Fixing the technical layer first also avoids writing content that would land on a site Google reads badly.

04

We write, we publish, we handle local

Reworked service pages, local pages for the towns you truly serve, articles answering the questions people ask before buying, an optimised Google Business Profile and contact details made consistent everywhere. You read it over and correct anything wrong about your trade; we adjust. You never have to write a line.

05

We measure and cut what produces nothing

Every month you see what was done, how many hours it took, what moved and what did not. Lines of work that produce nothing get dropped rather than recycled month after month. Reports are written in plain language, not as dashboards full of curves nobody reads.

06

You can stop whenever you want

No contract holding you in place. The work is monthly and hourly, and everything delivered stays with you: the fixes are on your site, the copy is on your pages, the accounts are in your name. We would rather keep you because it works than because a clause stops you leaving.

What an SEO agency cannot do

Nobody can guarantee you a position

It is the most common promise on the market and the one that should make you hang up. Nobody outside Google controls the algorithm. And there is no longer a single “first position” to win: results shift with who is searching, where they are, what device they hold, their history, the time of day and whichever blocks Google decides to show that day. Two people in the same room can see two different rankings for the same query.

What we can guarantee is the work: real fixes, published pages, an optimised listing, and a report showing exactly what was done and what it produced. When a supplier guarantees the top spot, one of two things is true: they are selling a promise they do not control, or they have picked a query so rare that nobody types it. Both end the same way.

Nobody can deliver results in two weeks

Search is not a switch. The fixes have to be made, Google has to come back through the site, re-evaluate the pages, and that re-evaluation has to turn into visits and then into calls. Some technical fixes do move things quickly, especially on pages already stuck just below the first page. But winning ground on contested searches is counted in months of steady work, not weeks.

That is exactly why most of your competitors never take it seriously: it is slow and it demands consistency. If you need customers this week, we will say so plainly — a well-built ad budget is the better short-term tool, and there is no shame in starting there. SEO builds alongside it, and what it builds keeps working after you turn the ad spend off.

SEO does not fix an offer that fails to convince

SEO brings people to your door. It does not decide whether they walk in. If your price is out of line with the market, if your product does not stand apart, if nobody returns the inquiries, if the form lands in a mailbox nobody opens any more — search work will simply expose that problem to more people, faster. We have seen mandates where the best recommendation was not a line of code: it was calling people back within the hour.

The same applies to the site itself. If your page finally gets visitors but they cannot tell within ten seconds what you do, for whom, where, and how to reach you, the search work loses its point. So we always look at both sides. And if your current site is beyond saving — too slow, badly structured, impossible to maintain — we will say so rather than optimise a lost cause. In that case our Ready14 product can restart on solid ground at $99 a month, with no setup fee.

Who this is right for — and who it is not

Yes, if people already search for your service

Contractor, clinic, garage, broker, service business: if your customers type the name of your service into Google before calling anyone, every search you miss is a customer calling someone else. This is where search work pays off most, because the demand already exists and the job is simply to go and get it.

Yes, if you can look further out than three months

SEO compounds: a well-built page keeps bringing inquiries long after it was written, with no cost per click. It takes patience at the start. If your business is stable and you expect to still be here in two years, it is one of the rare marketing investments that does not vanish the moment you stop paying.

No, if you need customers this week

An empty schedule does not get filled by search rankings. In that situation, paid ads, the phone and your own network will deliver far faster. We will tell you that during the call instead of selling you a mandate that arrives too late. Search can wait until the pressure comes off.

No, if nobody is searching for what you sell

Some products have no demand in Google yet: something so new nobody knows what to call it, a hyper-specialised offer with a handful of buyers in the country, a market that runs entirely on referrals. Optimising for searches that do not exist is spending hours for nothing. We check that beforehand, not afterwards.

Frequently asked questions about SEO

What does an SEO agency actually do?

It is a company whose job is to get your site showing up in Google results for the searches that bring you customers, without paying per click. In practice it splits into four work streams: the technical layer, so Google can read your site properly; content, so you have pages that genuinely answer your customers’ questions; local search, so you exist in your region and in the map results; and authority, meaning the mentions and links that build credibility for your domain. A serious agency then measures what it produced and corrects course. Here, all four are handled by the same person, locally, with nothing outsourced.

How much does SEO cost?

With us, $100 an hour, the same as every other kind of development — it is published on our pricing page and it does not change from client to client. No project-management hours, no account manager to pay for. What varies is the number of hours: a clean site that needs content is not the same job as a slow site that needs partial rebuilding. We estimate the hours block by block before starting, you approve, and you can remove whatever you want. Elsewhere on the market, search work is usually sold as a monthly package nobody itemises; an hourly rate can be checked, questioned and compared.

How long before I see results?

The honest answer is months, not weeks. The first movement usually comes from technical fixes and from pages already sitting just below the first page: there, a few hours of work can shift things fairly quickly. Gaining ground on contested searches takes consistency over several months. One detail that matters: the first signs appear in Search Console — more searches showing your site, positions creeping up — before they turn into phone calls. That is why we connect the measurement from day one, so you can see the needle move before the phone rings.

SEO or Google Ads?

They do different jobs. Google Ads buys immediate visibility: you are at the top tomorrow morning, you pay for every click, and it all stops the day the budget does. Organic search builds an asset: slower, but a well-ranked page keeps producing inquiries with no cost per click. If your schedule is empty right now, start with ads. If you want to stop paying for every visitor two years from now, start SEO today. Plenty of businesses run both, and the ads double as a test: the keywords that convert when paid tell you which pages are worth building organically.

What is technical SEO?

It is everything that lets Google read, understand and rank your site before it even looks at your writing: page indexing, loading speed, mobile display, titles and tags, broken links, redirects, structured data, the sitemap, correctly declared French and English versions, and the internal link structure. None of it is visible to a visitor, and it is frequently what has been capping a site for years. A technical SEO engagement starts with an audit listing those blockers, their real impact and the order to fix them in. On a properly built site, this part is done once and holds for a long time.

Do I need to rebuild my site to do SEO?

Usually not. We work perfectly well with an existing site: fix the technical layer, rework the pages, add new ones. Rebuilding becomes the right call when the foundation itself is the problem — a site so slow no optimisation rescues it, a structure that blocks adding pages, an abandoned platform that can no longer be updated safely. We will tell you that straight rather than bill optimisation hours on a lost cause. If a rebuild is warranted, Ready14 restarts you on solid ground at $99 a month with no setup fee, and the search work then begins on healthy footing.

How do you measure the results of an SEO mandate?

Through your own accounts, never ours. Google Search Console shows which searches display your site, at what position and how many clicks follow: it is the least disputable source there is. Traffic analytics show which pages actually bring people in. And inquiry tracking — calls, forms, quote requests — shows what ultimately counts. We look first at how many searches your site appears on, then at which pages are climbing, and above all at inquiries received. A ranking that rises without generating a single call is not a success, and the report will say so.

Why won’t you commit to a specific ranking?

Because we cannot deliver on it, and we refuse to sell a promise that is not ours to make. Google’s algorithm is outside our control, it changes constantly, and results vary from person to person with location, device and history. There is no single results page any more: there are millions of versions of it. What we do commit to is the work delivered, the hours billed, an honest report and your right to walk away whenever you want. In our view, a supplier who guarantees the top spot is mostly telling you how much they are willing to promise in order to sign.
